Dew Control

The formation of dew on your telescopes corrector plate, lens and primary mirrors can cut short an otherwise good night observing. To protect your telescope from dew most amateurs employ a combination of passive and active dew control methods. Passive control is when a dew shield is employed to protect the telescope lens from the exposed air and slows the formation of dew on the lens. Active control is when a heat strap is employed to apply heat to the lens so the lens stays less then 1deg above ambient air temperature. Heat straps are often used in conjunction with dew controllers to regulate the amount of heat applied to the lens.
